A thought-provoking fireside chat titled “Time to Reinvent, Time to Re-engineer” featured Mr. Satish Marathe, Director of the Central Board of RBI, in conversation with Mr. Babu Nair, Group Publisher and Founder of Banking Frontiers.
Mr. Marathe highlighted the strong performance of the cooperative banking sector, noting improvements in NPAs, capital adequacy, and provisioning. However, he warned that growth is still modest compared to other banks. He encouraged cooperative banks to take on more risk, invest in technology, develop skilled talent, and strengthen marketing to show their social impact.
He pointed out the need for vision documents, capital infusion, and innovation in products and outreach, especially for MSMEs and underserved communities. Mr. Marathe also mentioned ongoing discussions about new licenses for urban cooperative banks and the sector’s gradual shift towards mainstream banking practices.
He wrapped up by urging banks to remain financially sound, well-managed, and to aim for at least 10% annual growth, reminding them that “if you don’t grow, you go.”
